The word “pristine” means uncorrupted, unspoiled, fresh, pure.
Change that just a little, spell it “pristeen” as in teenager, and you begin to get a picture of girls, age 14 to 19, who demonstrate fresh, pure, “beauty from the soul.”
This was the idea behind the creation of Pristeen magazine, says founder and editor-in-chief Heather Moss. It was also impetus for a hands-on personal development course for girls, called Walking Tall” that is coming to the Phoenix area on November 13.
The magazine and the Walking Tall events are for “fashion-conscious, well-informed teen girls” and both are designed to educate, inspire and uplift, Heather says.
She is all-too aware that in today’s world, fashion and true beauty don’t always mix, but she believes there is certainly a place for that.
“High moral standards and other high values should be mainstream,” she says. “They appeal to a large group of girls out there, and girls sort of gravitate to that.”
Heather says calling her magazine “modest” makes people think “frumpy,” but “it’s not that at all,” she says. Along with the latest fashions, accessory ideas, makeup and beauty tips, Heather says there is a more important, overarching message.
“The message I want girls to get is about self-confidence and believing in themselves. I want them to feel beautiful, to be inspired to pursue their dreams,” she says.
The Walking Tall events give Heather a chance to interact with girls one on one.
“Walking Tall refers to the idea of modeling. Models are tall and they walk on the runway,” Heather says, “but, more importantly, Walking Tall is also meant to convey the idea of making good choices, having high standards and standing up for what’s right.”
Heather, a former model with McCarty in Salt Lake, taught modeling classes and produced fashion shows for more than 20 years. She is still passionate about modeling and works with individual girls to help them navigate the modeling world.
She says the Walking Tall events do include a modeling component for those girls who are interested. Yet, she says, “Not every girl can find success at modeling school.”
“I want to reach girls on a larger scale,” Heather says. With these events, “We want to provide a place where girls ages 12-19 can come and learn all about fashion/makeup, poise, confidence and more in a fun and interactive environment.”
Although Heather is from Texas, “My first two team members were from Phoenix, and my health director and fitness director are both there. It just made sense to do a Walking Tall event in Phoenix.”
Heather Moss, along with Pristeen’s Beauty Director, Celestial Williams, and the magazine’s Health and Fitness Director, Andrea Allen, will be among the speakers for the Phoenix event. In addition to participating in several interactive workshops about modeling, makeup, wardrobe and more, girls of all sizes will volunteer, then be chosen by random drawing to model in a fashion show, while others will direct the show and style the models.
The November 30 Walking Tall event will be held at the Doubletree by Hilton in Gilbert. For more information, including how to register, visit www.walkingtall.com. To learn more about Pristeen magazine or to sign up for a free digital copy, visit www.PristeenMagazine.com.
