Sounds of Zion, a premiere LDS music label, has a new owner, along with a new look, feel, and some new sounds.
From its beginnings, 30-plus years ago, Sounds of Zion has built a reputation for promoting LDS values with “the belief that music is a source of spiritual growth and enlightenment.” In September 2013, R Legacy Entertainment purchased Sounds of Zion, and committed to continuing that legacy with plans to reinvigorate the label, making it “the premiere LDS label,” and “a leader in the LDS music community.”
R Legacy Entertainment CEO, Gaylen Rust, made Dave Zabriskie the new president of Sounds of Zion and charged him with reestablishing the label and raising the bar among LDS musicians. Zabriskie has been in the music industry for more than 30 years. He composed the music for the LDS productions of “Light of the World,” “Savior of the World,” the new “Nauvoo Pageant,” and many other LDS productions.
Along with promoting existing artists, Zabriskie is focused on finding and developing new artists, with new music and products.
“There is a lot of great talent in the LDS world that no one knows about. We want to find these artists and bring them to the forefront of the LDS music scene,” Zabriskie says.
Currently, the label offers a roster of musicians and artists ranging from orchestral and choral works to 80’s pop. Some of the featured artists include William Joseph, Janice Kapp Perry, Daniel Beck and Cherie Call. All of the Sound of Zion products, including CDs, MP3s, DVDs, physical and digital sheet music can be purchased at yourLDSmusicstore.com.
Along with introducing Sounds of Zion’s new look and logo, Zabriskie has put together an experienced team that is passionate about producing the highest quality inspirational music.
One of the first things Zabriskie did to support Sounds of Zion’s goals was to host a Music Composition Contest. With over $9,000 in cash prizes, sponsored by yourLDSmusicstore.com, the 2013 competition had more than 750 submissions from 49 countries. The contest culminated with a live concert and awards ceremony. First, second and third place awards were given in three categories: Contemporary Christian, Instrumental, and LDS Choral. The winning compositions can be purchased at yourLDSmusicstore.com in sheet music form as well as a compilation CD of all the winning pieces, titled “Reflections—2013 Music Composition Competition—Winners CD.”
Sounds of Zion will begin accepting submissions for this year’s 2014 Music Composition Contest on March 9 and the submission deadline will be September 14. For more information and contest guidelines, visit soundsofzion.com.
