The recent death of Arizona State Senator John McCain invoked a wide range of emotional responses from those that knew, and knew of him. Upon his passing, Mesa immigration law attorney Yasser Sanchez reached out to The Arizona Beehive to reflect upon a recent and profound experience he shared with Senator McCain. With his blessing, we share this with you.
“In May of 2016, Ana Pereira of the McCain campaign asked me about a good activity to do as a break from campaigning around downtown Mesa. I suggested that we head over to the Mesa Temple Visitors’ Center and take the Senator on a tour. I called Visitors’ Center Director Elder Ashton and set up a tour for the senator and my family.
“Senator McCain found the visitors center to be peaceful, and all the Sisters and Elders to be both kind and impressive. One of the things he enjoyed most was the display of Books of Mormon in every language. He smiled and said, “I have a couple of those!”
He posed for pictures with all the missionaries serving there as well as with our family. He spoke very highly of our faith. He appreciated the hard-working community to which we belong, and the good that our members do around the world. He also respected our strong family values.
“It is a memory that our family will cherish. Out of that tour I created a close bond and friendship with Senator McCain.”
